Beer Soap?!
Sure, you’ve heard of drinking beer. But isn’t beer soap a bit of a stretch?
Why? Why would you put beer in soap?!
Excellent question. Well, you need a liquid in the mix to make soap. Most soapers use water. However, you can use many things; water, milk, goats milk, wine, beer…the list goes on. Each ingredient has it’s own benefits. As for beer, it’s said that beer in soap does the following:
- The hops in beer (once in soap) help to soothe irritated skin, and contain skin softening properties
- It’s said to be very moisturising
- Makes for a multi-purpose bar used for washing your body, hair, or even face (I love this bar for my face)
- The brewers yeast used in the manufacturing of the beer has antibacterial properties, and may work to fight acne

$30.00Konjac Face & Body Sponge Set
Konjac sponge – what on earth is that?!
A konjac sponge is a natural sponge made from the fibrous ‘konnyaku’ root vegetable of Japanese origin. It comes from the same family as the humble potato, and is commonly consumed as food (Konjac noodles, or as a kind of solid jelly-like vegetable marinated in various sauces) in Japan.
It is however also dried, ground, and mixed with water to form a paste, then calcium hydroxide is added (To make it alkaline). This mixture is then heated to solidify it, frozen overnight, then dried slowly to evaporate the water.
These sponges are:
- Vegan
- Made from a vegetable!
- Compostable
- They gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin
- Said to help remove blackheads, oil, and dead skin cells

The Kumiko soap dish is made from durable clear grade macrocarpa with no finishing oil. It is just plain naked timber – it has no staples or glue as the parts are pressed tightly together.

I’m going to make a broad sweeping generalization and say that most children dislike having their hair washed, combed, or brushed. So, what do you do? They don’t like sitting still for long either I hear you say. Don’t worry, I’m with you!
Spray and Leave
I’ve been trying this on the smallest member of the Balmy tribe (As she has the longest hair). After a couple of months, I can now call this a huge success! She even calls it ‘My special spray’. It probably helps that I added vanilla oil, and she happens to love that smell.
As she’s only 5 she needs me to spray it in for her. So all I do is lift her hair a bit and spray 3 sprays sporadically around her head, then leave it on for 5 minutes before combing. Job done.

Natural Shaving Soap
So you have a good quality razor. Now all you need is a natural shaving bar to complete your shaving routine. This soap is safe to use on your face, body, and in your hair, so it’s a multi-purpose solid bar of goodness!
What’s in it?
Our shaving bar has been formulated with patchouli, lavender, and cedarwood. Patchouli is said to be a natural antiseptic with the benefit of protecting wounds, and has been known to help in the treatment of some skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.
Cedarwood oil is often found in aftershave, perhaps due to the fact it’s known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-septic qualities. It’s also said to fight fungal infections, and help treat acne.
Finally, lavender is naturally anti-itch, anti-bacterial, anti-anxiety, and anti-fungal in nature. Therefore, the 3 essential oils in this recipe are a pretty fabulous combination for your skin.
This bar also contains neem oil as part of the base recipe.
Neem oil?
Neem oil has been used for thousands of years for it’s medicinal properties. It’s widely used in the garden, as an insect repellent, in medicine, and in skin care. Neem oil is anti-microbial, and works by removing bacteria from the surface of the skin. Therefore, it helps in the treatment and prevention of acne as there’s no bacteria sitting on the skin’s surface. Neem is also said to prevent and treat scars, whilst reducing redness and inflammation.

Why Do I Need A Soap Saver Bag?
This particular soap bag is very useful. Why?
- Use it to keep a full bar of soap in. Simply place the bar in the bag, use it to wash your body, then hang it up to dry. It helps keep your soap from going mushy and allows it to dry out between uses.
- Soap scraps now have somewhere to go! If you’re like me, then you try to stick little pieces of soap to the next bar. Well this is a problem no more. Simply place all of your soap scraps in this bag, wait until it’s full, then voila! A new bag of soap to wash with.
- Exfoliation. This bag is perfect for helping rid your body of dry skin. Simply place your soap inside and use this bag to scrub your body. It’ll help eliminate dead skin and leave your skin feeling smooth.
- Hang them anywhere there’s a tap! We have these in our bathrooms and laundry. Super handy to keep soap in.

Soap scraps are not waste!
A byproduct of soaping is soap scraps. There’s a lot of offcuts and sometimes seconds (Due to the fact soaping doesn’t always go to plan! Therefore, I (Sharon) simply take these scraps and turn them into something useful.
What can I do with soap scraps?
Many things! Here in the Totally Balmy household we use them for all sorts of things. Here’s a few ideas based on what we do with ours:
- Save them up in the soap saver bag, then use this as a new (multi-coloured!) bar of soap
- Chop/grate them into small pieces to make liquid soap
- Once you have liquid soap you can make laundry powder, dishwashing powder, dishwashing liquid, or cleaning paste

Solid Conditioning Bars Are Here!
This product is one many of you have asked about for a couple of years now. Finally it’s here!
It’s basically like the conditioner we’ve traditionally bought in bottles, but in solid form, and with fewer ingredients.
How Do I Use It?
These conditioning bars are pretty easy to use. I’ve made them a square shape so you can easily differentiate them from the shampoo bars. They’re also a handy size to hold in your hand.
- Wet your hair
- Shampoo as normal (Or not, if you don’t need to do this as frequently)
- Hold the conditioning bar in your hand and glide it through your hair between 3-6 times. This is obviously different for everyone. Trial and error will help you figure out how many strokes work best for you.
- Root to tip? I have a shorter hair style. Therefore, I glide it from root to tip. However, if your hair is longer, try conditioning the ends only and see how that works for you.
